Measuring Guide

To be sure of the best possible fit, take time to measure your windows carefully. We recommend using a metal tape measure for accuracy.

Measuring for curtains

The first step is to decide whether the curtains are to hang from a track or a pole, both of which should be positioned approximatley 15cm (6 inches) above the window and extend 15-20cm (6-8 inches) either side to allow the curtain to be pulled back. Fit the track or pole prior to taking measurements.

Measuring the width:

Measure the total length of the track or pole (excluding the finials). Don't forget to allow for overlap – this is an additional measurement, normally 2.5cm (1 inch) that allows the curtains to overlap in the middle when closed.

Measuring the length:

Before measuring the length, decide on where you want the curtains to finish; to the sill, below the sill or to the floor. The finished lenght is entirely a personal preference but we would recommend the following:

  • Sill length curtains to finish 1cm above the sill
  • Curtains that finish below the sill should finish approximatley 15cm (6 inches) below the sill
  • Floor length curtains to finish 1cm above floor level
  • To break on the floor add 3-5cm
  • To pool the curtains (recommended for dress curtains) add 15cm

Measuring curtains for a pole:

Pencil pleat curtains: measure from the eye (the small metal ring at the end of each curtain ring). This will prevent the rings from being obscured when the curtains are hung.

Tab top, slot top and eyelet curtains: measure from the top of the pole.

Measuring curtains for a track:

Measure from the top of the track.

Measuring for blinds

First decide whether you want the blind to fit inside or outside of the window recess.

Measuring inside a window recess:

Measuring Guide For Blinds
  • First ensure the recess is not obstructed by anything so that the blind can hang freely once fitted.
  • Ensure the recess is atleast 5cm deep, to allow for the mechanism to fit properly.
  • Using a metal tape measure, measure the total width and the length (see above diagram). Do this in several places to allow for any slight irregularity in your window.
  • Note down the narrowest of these measurements.

Measuring inside a window recess:

  • Decide how much you require the blind to overlap on all sides. We recommend this to be atleast 7cm each side of the window frame or recess (this is so the blind does not let any light in)
  • Using a metal tape measure, measure the width and the length (see above diagram) .
  • Note down the measurements.
